Local Licenses
Many localities, such as the City of Seattle, require a company doing business in that locality to obtain, and periodically renew, a local business license. This local license is in addition to any licenses and registrations required by Washington state law. Each locality will have different licensing requirements, reflecting local concerns. A license fee will be imposed on the business for the privilege of doing business in that locality, which may be a flat annual amount, based on revenues, or calculated using some other measure.
A locality will often also impose requirements for other licenses, registrations and permits, especially in matters related to land use, zoning and the environment. Companies are encouraged not to overlook licensing at the local level, and to contact an attorney who can advise whether the local licensing issues should be a concern for the type of business in question and its proposed location.
