Washington State has long been a champion of strong relations with China including the inaugural University of Washington China Studies Program in 1909 and in 1973, Washington’s US Senator, Warren Magnuson, visited China as a guest of Premier Zhou En-lai. China has long recognized Washington State as an important trading partner as marked by Deng Xiaoping’s visit to Seattle in 1979 soon followed by a visit from the Chinese cargo ship Liulinhai to the Port of Seattle, the first Chinese vessel to call at a US port in 30 years.
