Job Descriptions
Written job descriptions are essential for employers because they help the employer establish whether the employee is “properly classified,” (as exempt or non-exempt) and it also helps when dealing with disability accommodation issues because it sets out what is an “essential job function.” Washington requires employers to accommodate disabilities so long as the employee can perform the “essential job functions” with or without an accommodation. Consequently, job descriptions help in the “disability interactive process” to determine whether an accommodation is appropriate under the circumstances.
