Applications & Interviewing
Under Washington law, it is an “unfair employment practice” to require candidates for employment to complete applications which express limitations or specifications as to age, gender, marital status, race, creed, color, national origin, or the presence of any mental or physical disability, unless based upon a bona fide occupational qualification. Information requested in person by an interviewer or on applications should be justified by a legitimate job-related purpose. The Washington State Human Rights Commission has developed a guide for employers regarding acceptable and unacceptable pre-employment inquiries.
